Currently, the Seattle Aquarium is the eighth-largest aquarium, by attendance, in the United States. Pre-pandemic annual attendance was 850,000 visitors, and including our community-outreach and beach-based programs, we typically reach over one million people annually. The Aquarium employs 135 full-time employees, supports more than 1,200 volunteers and has a 54-person board of directors. All staff, volunteers and board of directors ascribe to and conduct themselves in alignment with the Aquarium’s S.A.L.I.S.H. and D.E.I. values. 

  

The role: 

The annual fund officer contributes to the success of the Seattle Aquarium by helping to build and ensure a successful, data-driven and donor-centric annual fund program. This position will expand and build upon the annual fund segment of a comprehensive fundraising program that engages with donors where they are, moves them through the donor pipeline and meets annual financial goals. A successful candidate will be able to shape and execute a data-driven annual fund program, recommend and test new approaches, collaborate with Aquarium colleagues across departments, and track and assess results to improve outcomes.  

 

This position reports to the associate director, individual giving, and works closely with the donor relations officer, data and reporting analyst, major gifts officers and membership staff.  

 

Essential functions: 

  • Create and execute an innovative, multi-channel, year-round annual fund campaign, including a strong digital presence and online giving, mailings, appeals, reports and other relevant correspondence. 
  • With associate director, individual giving, set annual goals and relevant, measurable and actionable metrics to evaluate program success. 
  • In collaboration with the Aquarium’s Marketing-Communications team, ensure a cohesive approach to online giving and text-to-give program components. 
  • In partnership with philanthropy data and reporting analyst, assess the success of the program through standard, baseline metrics to measure annual fund results. 
  • Monitor the program’s progress, report on results, refine the program through data-driven learning, and refresh strategy and program elements as needed to meet financial and activity metrics with a goal of increasing the donor base. 
  • Provide associate director, individual giving, and vice president of Philanthropy monthly reports on results.  
  • Develop and implement strategies to retain and upgrade donors and build the donor pipeline through new and innovative acquisition strategies, including participation in local fundraising efforts such as GivingTuesday and GiveBIG. 
  • Coordinate the Friends of the Aquarium donor program, including partnering with the donor engagement officer on fulfillment of donor club benefits. 
  • In consultation with associate director, individual giving, complete annual forecasting exercises and budgeting needs. 
  • Write regular updates for annual fund acknowledgement letter templates. 

 

Additional responsibilities:  

  • Help to staff Aquarium philanthropy events.  
  • Perform other related responsibilities to successfully achieve the Aquarium’s philanthropy goals and objectives as necessary. 
  • Serve as an articulate and passionate spokesperson for the Aquarium and its mission. 
  • Contribute to the effort to build a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization. 
  • Honor the rights of our donors under the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Code of Ethics.  
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated understanding of the donor giving cycle and the role of annual fund programs in a comprehensive fundraising program. 
  • Excellent English language skills: oral, written and reading as well as strong interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Interest in and experience with data and data analysis, and using findings to shape donor strategy. 
  • Ability to compile and analyze data, and suggest next steps for improvement or maintenance. 
  • Demonstrated self-starter. 
  • Knowledge and utilization of Raisers Edge donor database or similar platform. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills. 

 

Education and work experience:  

  • A.A. degree required; B.A./B.S. degree desired, preferably in nonprofit management, marketing, communications, humanities or related field. 
  • Minimum two years of fundraising experience, with demonstrated success in gift solicitation and direct mail/social media appeals and campaigns. 
  • Will consider other equivalent combinations of education and experience. 

 

Salary and benefits:  

This is an exempt role. The targeted salary range for this role is $55,000$60,000 per year dependent on experience. Includes Seattle Aquarium’s comprehensive benefits package: medical, vision, dental (subsidized dependent coverage also available), HRA, FSA, life insurance, long-term disability, subsidized transit (ORCA) pass, Aquarium Family Plus membership and generous paid time off.
