The school’s faculty and staff are engaged in a broad array of high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs, significant research, in addition to a wide range of community and professional service organizations.

The Role: 

Reporting to the Vice President, Student Affairs, the Director of Communications will lead and manage the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) Communications Department and will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the department and all communications, marketing, social media, web, graphics/infographics, and photo/video production for a division of over 30 departments and programs. The Director will provide supervisory direction for all division communications platforms, ensuring consistent communications practices. The Director uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication efforts. The Director works closely with CSULB Strategic Communications and ASI Communications. This role supervises a team of professional staff and student interns/assistants to guide the strategic vision of the division and the department. The Director will be responsible for executing the division communications plan, creating goals, and developing a robust, purposeful, and efficient workflow for communications content.

Major Responsibilities: 

  

Developing and Editing Communications Materials  

  • Delivers communications content to various stakeholders including students, Student Affairs staff, university community, faculty, deans, associate deans, and prospective students. 
  • Develops marketing strategies and objectives to effectively reach their intended target audiences in equitable ways. Ensures our division communication strategies are culturally informed and sensitive to the populations we serve. 
  • Manages social media strategy and all social media campaigns. 
  • Develops, writes, and edits a variety of printed and electronic communication materials including newsletters, video scripts, presentations, urgent communications, and emails for large audiences. 
  • Consults with the division calendar of events to schedule coverage for campus events and programs to ensure we capture events and important division milestones. 
  • Manages the divisions use of the university style guide. Fosters innovation and creativity in design, photography, videography, and graphic elements, while ensuring all communications deliverables adhere to university brand identity standards. 
  • Works closely with the Director of Special Projects to create media materials, publications, briefings, etc. for division strategic planning and executive visits. 
  • Reviews data available from communications efforts and adjusts communications strategy when necessary. 
  • Assists in the roll out or launching of any new communications platforms available to division stakeholders. 

  

Leadership and management of Communication Strategy 

  • Supervises, trains, manages, and provides day-to-day guidance to professional and student staff, including providing constructive feedback and support, completing performance evaluations, managing tasks, and prioritizing assignments. 
  • Communicates divisional priorities including our commitments to supporting student mental health and creating equitable environments for students to learn and staff to work. Plays a key role in distributing updates about progress related to our divisional equity efforts.  
  • Administers all aspects of planning, developing, coordinating, executing, and managing within communications, marketing, social media, web, graphics/infographics, presentations, and photo/video production areas for Student Affairs. 
  • Meets regularly with the division communications team to communicate changes, projects, statistics, marketing efforts, and new platforms. 
  • Supervises the graphic design operations. Reviews quality of final products before release, when necessary. 
  • Ensures all communications platforms and materials produced comply with ADA and ATI standards, ensuring accessibility for all stakeholders. 
  • Works closely with Strategic Communications team and represents Student Affairs at meetings with other campus communicators 
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of activities around the campus and in other divisions for opportunities to co-communicate and share information to faculty and community partners  

  

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university in communications, journalism, public relations, or job-related field required. 
  • Five to seven years of progressively responsible professional and/or technical experience in communications, journalism, marketing, photo/video production, public affairs, or institutional marketing, preferably for a non-profit or government organization or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Possess or be eligible to possess a valid CA License. 
  • Minimum of seven years' experience with photo and video software to be able to train and guide graphic designers, photo/video production in delivering high quality digital assets.  
  • Minimum of five years' experience with social media platforms and marketing techniques to engage a digital student audience.  
  • Minimum of five years' experience and fluency in communications and platforms including, but not limited to Microsoft Teams, Maestro, and Constant Contact, etc. 
  • Minimum of five years of working knowledge of technology platforms including, but not limited to Microsoft suite, Symplicity, Qualtrics, Zoom, Anthology Engage, etc. 
  • Minimum of five years' experience and fluency in Adobe Creative Cloud Suite including Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and video editing software 
  • Minimum of seven years of experience communicating particularly sensitive information including ability to write messages around controversial or high-profile topics in a timely and efficient manner. 
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in creating effective and efficient workflows for projects.  
  • Minimum of four years of supervising and leading full time professional staff members including coaching, training, leading, managing, and building multi-generational and diverse groups of team members. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Skills:  

  • Master’s degree or doctorate in communications, journalism, public relations, or job-related field preferred.

  • Ability to maintain the highest level of discretion and management of confidential information. 
  • Ability to commit and ensure compliance with accessibility requirements in communications technology and various communication platforms. 
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management skills with ability to be both detail and big-picture oriented.  
  • Proven experience working effectively with colleagues across various units to ensure alignment with strategic communications initiatives and share department updates.  
  • Ability to produce innovative high quality digital marketing materials to be viewed by a variety of campus stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion including evidence of equity mindedness in previous experience with communications, marketing materials and media. 
  • Experience with utilizing an equity lens in employment practices and respectful interactions with others. 
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule of some evenings and weekends for special events and programs.
