Another Source’s client, Cal State Long Beach, is recruiting a Director of Housing Facilities Operations to join their team in Long Beach, California. (Internally titled: Director of Housing and Residential Life Operations)

Cal State Long Beach, one of the largest universities in the CSU system, is located in Long Beach on a beautifully landscaped, 320-acre campus near the ocean and the thriving downtown area. University Housing and Residential Life creates safe, welcoming, and inclusive communities that engage a diverse student population in their personal and social development while promoting academic success and responsible citizenship through high quality services and initiatives. University Housing has 23 buildings, two office buildings, and the Pointe Conference Center totaling about 650,000 square feet and houses about 3,000 students.

The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is: $115,000 – $140,000 based on experience.  

 

About the role 

The Director of Housing Facilities Operations is a critical leadership position responsible for the management and operation of Housing and Residential Life’s (HRL) facilities. This includes maintenance, custodial services, and overseeing both minor and major capital projects. With direct oversight of a multi-skilled workforce, you will drive operational excellence by planning, staffing, directing, and managing facility operations while fostering an equitable and inclusive environment for students. 

 

By ensuring HRL facilities are safe, functional, and welcoming, you will directly contribute to enhancing campus life, student retention, and graduation success. Join a team dedicated to student-centered service and equity-minded practices. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

Operational Leadership: 

  • Direct all facets of housing facilities management, including maintenance, custodial services, and infrastructure improvement projects. 
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term goals that ensure effective and efficient operations. 

Team Management: 

  • Recruit, train, and evaluate staff, building a skilled and cohesive workforce. 
  • Create a culture of collaboration, accountability, and equity. 

Project Oversight: 

  • Manage all routine maintenance, emergency repairs, and facility enhancements. 
  • Lead capital projects, ensuring quality, compliance, and cost-effectiveness. 

Budget Administration: 

  • Prepare and oversee the facilities budget, ensuring strategic allocation of resources. 
  • Monitor expenses and address project cost overruns effectively. 

Campus Partner Collaboration: 

  • Cultivate strong relationships with campus partners to align goals and resolve challenges. 
  • Serve as a visible and trusted leader within the department and across the university. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • At least 5 years of facilities management experience, including budget management and supervisory responsibilities. 
  • Strong understanding of safety and risk mitigation in facilities operations. 
  • Proven ability to supervise and manage a diverse workforce effectively. 
  • Skilled in planning, staffing, and overseeing construction, maintenance, and custodial projects. 
  • Familiarity with repair, construction, and alteration processes, including reading blueprints and using technical tools. 
  • Experience with building maintenance, custodial operations, and grounds management. 
  • Proficient in managing multiple projects, ensuring quality control, and meeting deadlines. 
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to create clear reports and correspondence. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle complex, dynamic workloads. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, manage crises, and resolve conflicts professionally. 
  • Knowledge of building codes, fire codes, ADA requirements, and OSHA safety regulations. 
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, facility management software, and willingness to learn tools like StarRez. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a unionized workforce environment. 
  • Physical capability to work in various conditions, including confined spaces, outdoors, or hazardous environments. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree or additional relevant education or training. 
  • 7+ years of experience in housing, student services, or related university operations. 
  • 5+ years of experience managing custodial services. 
  • Strong background in supervising within a unionized environment.
