Another Source’s client, CSU Monterey Bay, is recruiting a Director of Development to join their team in Monterey, California.

Founded in 1994 on the historic site of Fort Ord, Cal State Monterey Bay is one of the youngest campuses in the California State University system, yet it has quickly established itself as a leader in higher education. The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is $89,508 – $100,008 based on experience, with relocation support and staff housing available. 

About the role:

As the Director of Development at Cal State Monterey Bay, you'll play a pivotal role in cultivating and securing major gifts from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations to support the university's growing initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity to build meaningful relationships and shape the future of an institution celebrating its 30th anniversary. 

Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, you will work closely with university leadership, academic programs, and development teams to advance fundraising goals. Your expertise in major gifts, corporate partnerships, and foundation relations will help propel the university’s mission forward, creating a legacy of lasting support. 

How You Will Make an Impact: 

  • Build and Manage Relationships: Cultivate and steward a portfolio of 75-125 prospective donors, including corporations, foundations, and individual donors, focusing on securing major gift commitments aligned with Cal State Monterey Bay’s fundraising objectives. 
  • Engage Prospective Donors: Conduct 12 to 15 field contacts per month to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors, ensuring meaningful connections. 
  • Develop Strategies: Create and implement written engagement and solicitation strategies that guide prospective donors, including corporations and foundations, through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship cycle, utilizing a moves management system to track progress. 
  • Collaborate with Academic Leaders: Partner with Deans, faculty, and staff across assigned academic colleges or programs to ensure alignment of development efforts with their needs and priorities. 
  • Support Annual Giving: Contribute to the Annual Gift program, nurturing relationships with assigned prospects to enhance ongoing support for Cal State Monterey Bay. 
  • Assist in Strategic Planning: Work alongside the Associate Vice President for University Development in developing and executing a comprehensive development strategic plan. 
  • Coordinate Development Activities: Collaborate with the University Development Office and other campus departments to ensure seamless coordination of development efforts and adherence to best practices. 
  • Participate in University Committees: Engage in committee work and special projects to refine development processes, ensuring policies and procedures are in the best interest of the university. 
  • Supervise and Mentor: Provide guidance and feedback to assigned support staff, fostering professional growth and development within the team. 

 

What you will bring: 

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • Three (3) years of demonstrated success record of successful cultivation, solicitation and philanthropic closure of major gifts. Increased responsibility as a development or major gift officer in higher education, academic medical institution or nonprofit organization or demonstrated transferable communication, relationship building and scholarship strategic thinking skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Five (5) years of additional related annual fund, major or principal gift experience. Demonstrated success in philanthropic community engagement.    
  • Fundraising/donor relations or sales experience in support of Institutional priorities. Knowledge of the local philanthropic community.   
  • Experience working in higher education. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, Raiser's Edge, and Google mail and calendaring programs.
