About the role: 

 

The Senior Underwriter for the Homebuyer Program plays a pivotal role in evaluating complex loan applications for down payment assistance and related homebuyer initiatives. This position ensures adherence to program guidelines, regulatory standards, and internal policies, while consistently delivering exceptional service to borrowers and partners. 

 

Taking full ownership of files from application through approval, the Senior Underwriter navigates complex scenarios to support timely and accurate loan decisions under the direction of the Homebuyer Programs Manager. In addition to underwriting responsibilities, this role provides mentorship to junior staff, drives process improvements, and collaborates across departments to help ensure successful outcomes for first-time homebuyers. 

 

The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is: $89,000 - $108,000 annually based on experience 

 

What you will be doing:  

Program Knowledge & Compliance: 

  • Demonstrating deep knowledge of all homebuyer assistance programs, eligibility requirements, and underwriting standards. 
  • Applying program guidelines accurately and consistently in all underwriting decisions. 
  • Maintaining compliance with internal policies, program regulations, and lending laws, including GFE, TILA, ECOA, RESPA, and HMDA. 
  • Staying up to date on changes in underwriting practices, program rules, and regulatory guidelines. 
  • Supporting internal and external audits by ensuring documentation is complete and compliance-ready. 

Underwriting & Loan Processing: 

  • Reviewing and analyzing loan applications to determine program eligibility and assess loan risk. 
  • Verifying and evaluating income, asset, credit, and collateral documentation. 
  • Underwriting loans in accordance with program and regulatory guidelines and issuing decisions with clear rationale. 
  • Reviewing and clearing loan conditions to ensure complete and accurate files. 
  • Preparing files for final review and approval or denial by the Manager of Homebuyer Programs. 
  • Troubleshooting complex scenarios and providing guidance to junior underwriters or processors as needed. 
  • Maintaining accountability for assigned files from application through approval, meeting deadlines and service standards. 
  • Ensuring accurate data entry and documentation using systems such as Salesforce, Box.com, and Excel-based loan worksheets. 
  • Meeting department productivity and quality benchmarks. 

Customer Service & Stakeholder Communication: 

  • Providing responsive, professional support to borrowers, internal staff, and external partners. 
  • Collaborating with processors, education specialists, and real estate professionals to complete documentation. 
  • Communicating underwriting decisions and status updates clearly to team members and external stakeholders. 
  • Promoting transparency and alignment through timely and effective communication. 

 

Team Collaboration, Training & Continuous Improvement: 

  • Participating in quality control activities and peer reviews to ensure consistent underwriting standards. 
  • Offering insights and feedback to improve processes and enhance program delivery. 
  • Occasionally supporting outreach efforts to promote homeownership programs. 
  • Effectively managing workload to meet established turnaround times. 

 

Additional Responsibilities (as needed): 

  • Conducting borrower counseling sessions covering documents, disclosures, and closing procedures. 
  • Supporting the funding process by clearing conditions and preparing fund release documentation. 
  • Conducting post-closing reviews for compliance with program standards. 
  • Preparing and organizing closed loan files for audit or transfer to Asset Management. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Minimum 10 years of residential mortgage underwriting experience required 
  • In-depth knowledge of homebuyer assistance programs, FHA/VA/Conventional underwriting, and affordable housing best practices.  
  • Strong analytical skills in evaluating income, assets, credit, and collateral.  
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, time-management skills, and attention to detail.  
  • Well-versed knowledge in relevant compliance regulations (TILA, RESPA, ECOA, HMDA, FCRA, etc.). 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; experience with Salesforce and file-sharing tools (e.g., Box.com).  
  • Able to adapt to changing demands while maintaining high performance.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work across diverse communities.  
  • Commitment to outstanding customer service and first-time homebuyer support.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Affordable housing experience strongly preferred. 
  • Familiarity with FNMA, FHLC, FHA, and VA guidelines preferred. 
  • Bilingual proficiency in a language reflecting the communities we serve, is a plus. 
  • NMLS license preferred.
