This key leadership role serves within the Bureau of Professional Standards and Compliance at FSUPD. The Lieutenant is responsible for overseeing internal affairs, background investigations, and departmental accreditation. This position ensures policy compliance and operational integrity while supervising the property and evidence unit and serving as the department’s Emergency Management Liaison. The Lieutenant is a member of the FSUPD Command Staff and collaborates directly with department leadership on critical initiatives. Reporting to the Captain of Professional Standards and Compliance The Lieutenant of Professional Standards and Compliance will supervise a civilian accreditation manager and student evidence technicians.

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Conduct and manage internal administrative investigations in line with state law and departmental policy 
  • Oversee and review background checks for all new law enforcement hires 
  • Supervise agency accreditation efforts and property/evidence audits 
  • Lead the department’s Property and Evidence Unit; supervise the Evidence Custodian 
  • Collaborate with University Emergency Operations during activations 
  • Support departmental projects, policies, and compliance initiatives 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of sworn law enforcement experience, OR 
  • High school diploma/equivalent and 8 years of sworn law enforcement experience (or a combination totaling 8 years) 
  • Must meet the requirements of Section 943.13, Florida Statutes 
  • Valid Florida driver’s license (or ability to obtain prior to hire) 
  • Significant supervisory experience strongly preferred 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Sworn law enforcement background in the state of Florida strongly preferred (due to Police Bill of Rights and statutory knowledge) 
  • Accreditation leadership experience in a Florida agency

Work Schedule: 

The role will involve on-call duties and expectations to be further discussed with the Captain of Professional Standards and Compliance. It will require work outside the standard 9am-5pm, with flexibility for hours worked.
