Each year, Bechtel provides immigration advising, compliance services, and holistic support for more than 9,000 international students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and their families. What you will be doing: 

The Bechtel International Center serves as a hub for Stanford’s global community, providing support, resources, and guidance to international students, scholars, and faculty. We are seeking an Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director to provide vision, leadership, and strategy for the Center. This senior leader will oversee immigration compliance, direct operations, advocate for the international community, and shape Stanford’s approach to global engagement. 

 

In this role, you will lead the Bechtel International Center with strategic vision, long-term planning, and operational oversight. You will serve as the University’s primary institutional officer for federal immigration compliance, policy, and advocacy, ensuring adherence to complex regulations while guiding institutional decision-making. 

 

You will also advise senior leadership and academic departments on immigration matters, offering expertise on challenging regulatory and policy issues. As the head of the Center, you will manage a team of senior-level staff, providing mentorship, setting direction, and ensuring strong succession planning to sustain organizational excellence. 

 

Finally, you will represent Stanford in national and international forums, building partnerships with peer institutions and federal agencies, and serving as a strong advocate for Stanford’s international community. 

 

Anticipated annual salary range: $191,546 - $239,965, depending on experience. Relocation support available.  

 

How you will spend your time: 

Immigration & Compliance Leadership 

  • Serve as Stanford’s Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO). 
  • Ensure institutional compliance with SEVIS, USCIS, and Department of State regulations. 
  • Troubleshoot complex immigration cases and advocate with federal agencies on behalf of the University. 

Strategic Leadership & Planning 

  • Define and implement the long-range vision for the Bechtel International Center. 
  • Oversee budgets, facilities, programs, policies, publications, and outreach. 
  • Represent the Center and Stanford in high-level discussions across campus and externally. 

Advocacy & Policy Development 

  • Partner with University leadership, Government Relations, General Counsel, and other offices to shape immigration policy and advocacy strategies. 
  • Build strong networks with colleagues at peer institutions to anticipate and respond to shifts in federal policy. 

Organizational Leadership & Staff Development 

  • Direct the work of managers and senior-level staff. 
  • Make staffing decisions, mentor and coach leaders, and ensure succession planning. 
  • Establish policies and guidelines that safeguard compliance and uphold institutional standards. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.  
  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management. 
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information. 
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience with significant and complex budgetary/financial management. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in higher education, international education, or related field. 
  • Experience working in a higher education setting. 
  • Minimum of seven years of experience working as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) based on F/J federal law training, including government online training as evidenced by a certificate of passing, and meet government eligibility requirements. 
  • Experience of in-depth immigration work performed on a routine daily basis and possess a thorough understanding in H-1B, E-3, TN and TN and O-1 visas, in addition to Employment-Based sponsorship processes including but not limited to: EB-2 Standard Labor Certification process, EB-1(a) Extraordinary Ability, and EB-1(b) Outstanding Professor and Researcher. 
  • Experience managing a large department, budget and a high-volume caseload. 
  • Experience interpreting immigration policy and advising senior leadership
