About the Role: 

The Housing Community Service Officer supports the safety and wellbeing of students, guests, and staff across San Jose State University’s residence halls and apartment communities. This position works collaboratively with University Housing Services and the University Police Department to provide patrol coverage, respond to calls for service, and ensure a safe and secure living environment for approximately 4,200 residents. This position includes nights and weekends on a rotating schedule. 

Work Schedule: HCSOs work three 12-hour shifts each week plus a 4-hour shift every other Wednesday. Both day and night shifts are available. 

  • Day Shift: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and every other Wednesday, 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. 
  • Night Shift: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and every other Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m. 

Your Day Will Likely Include 

  • Performing foot patrols of housing buildings and grounds to maintain safety and visibility. 
  • Responding to calls for service, alarms, and emergency situations. 
  • Monitoring building access systems, CCTV, and fire safety systems. 
  • Assisting residents, staff, and visitors while encouraging compliance with housing policies. 
  • Reporting hazards, suspicious activity, and maintenance issues. 
  • Supporting University Housing staff and University Police during crises or emergencies. 
  • Writing clear and accurate incident reports. 
  • Participating in safety meetings and training with the University Police Department. 

 

Experience You Will Bring to the Organization 

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required). 
  • Valid California driver’s license. 
  • Six months of previous police, security, or military law enforcement experience (preferred). 
  • Experience working in a residential or housing environment (preferred). 
  • Strong customer service and communication skills. 
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in emergencies. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a diverse, multicultural community.
